the modern café is the apparently more practical successor to the original cafés of baroque europe, which began to proliferate in the 1600s after coffee was first introduced to the continent by the turks.

unlike most modern cafés, these baroque cafés were built to accommodate extended community gatherings, where people with a whole lot of time on their hands would spend hours upon hours gossiping, reading, listening to live music, and of course, drinking plenty of coffee (which was a new and exciting fad at the time). the baroque café was the place to be.

life seems to have sped up since those days, and though most of us can’t afford to sit for six hours spilling the village tea in a powdered wig, the coffee fad stuck around. we figured we ought to bring the music back too!
